Infant Oral Health Care

•••
With the establishment of a dental home for your little one, we will assess your child’s risk for getting cavities and address any specific concerns you may have. We look forward to helping your child with their first steps towards a lifetime of Happy Healthy Teeth!

Adolescent Oral Health Care

•••
The relationship we have with our patients extends through their teenage years. We understand that the dental health of today’s teenagers involves more than just preventing and restoring cavities. These topics include braces, tooth whitening, athletic mouthguards, and wisdom teeth.

SPECIAL HEALTH CARE NEEDS

•••
All children deserve the ability to receive dental care in an environment that meets their specific needs. Our office is fully equipped to accommodate all children, allowing us to provide care in an environment that is most comfortable for you and your child.

Preventative Care

•••
The recipe for success in lowering the risk of tooth decay in our patients consists of patient education, nutritional counseling, and dental sealants. These are done in addition to regular check-ups, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. Rather than being reactive when problems arise, we encourage being proactive with your child’s dental care.

Restorative Treatment

•••
We offer a wide variety of evidence-based restorative techniques that are both safe and effective. These procedures can include dental fillings, crowns, pulp therapy, extractions, and more. All recommendations that are provided will be centered around what is in the best interest for your child.

Digital X-Rays
•••

Dental X-rays are valuable in helping us determine the overall dental health of your child. They allow us to diagnose dental disease, monitor the eruption of developing teeth, and evaluate the health of the jaw bones and teeth. By diagnosing dental disease early, it allows us to provide the most conservative and cost-effective treatments.

Keeping your children safe is of the utmost importance to us. The frequency for taking dental x-rays is based off of your child’s risk for tooth decay and is in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

By taking digital x-rays, we are able to obtain high resolution images while reducing the radiation used in comparison with traditional film x-rays. Even though scatter radiation is minimal, we also provide lead aprons and thyroid collars to further reduce the potential for exposure.

A flight from Los Angeles to New York will expose a person to the same dose of radiation as:

Taking two chest x-rays

Taking eight dental x-rays

Eating four hundred bananas

Sedation Dentistry
•••

To accomplish the goals of minimizing anxiety, nurturing a positive dental experience, and performing high-quality treatment in a safe environment, our team provides an array of behavior management techniques that is customized for each child. Communication and trust is essential in all behavior management techniques recommended and performed. Techniques such as Tell-Show-Do, positive reinforcement, distraction, and modeling are just some of the types of behavior management provided on a regular basis. We understand that no two children are exactly alike. Some children may need something in addition to the TLC we provide. For these patients, we offer three forms of sedation dentistry:

Nitrous oxide with oxygen is commonly referred to as “laughing gas”, and is effective at minimizing discomfort and anxiety that a child may have. It is a colorless, odorless gas that is breathed in by the child through the nose. Nitrous oxide takes effect relatively quickly and is rapidly eliminated from the body when treatment is complete. The child is fully conscious throughout the entire appointment. If nitrous oxide is recommended, we hope to achieve the following:

Increase tolerance to longer appointments

For some children, the use of nitrous oxide with oxygen may not be enough to provide the appropriate care in a safe environment. Fortunately, dental treatment can still be accomplished with oral conscious sedation. This technique uses the administration of medication. The dosage and types of medicine is customized for each child, as they are based on the patient’s age, weight, and dental needs. If oral conscious sedation is recommended, we hope to achieve the following:

Unfortunately, oral conscious sedation does not work for everyone. After a thorough assessment of your child’s previous dental history, in-office behavior, and the extent of dental treatment required, the use of general anesthesia may be recommended. It is only recommended when the risk of providing treatment while the child is awake outweighs the risks of general anesthesia. The child will be “asleep” while all necessary dental treatment is completed in a single appointment. If general anesthesia is recommended, we hope to achieve the following:

To provide general anesthesia safely in our office, we work with a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Edwin Lee. He has extensive hospital-based experience in pediatric, cardiac, neurosurgical, obstetric, and general anesthesia. In addition to a license to practice medicine in California, he has a 10 General Anesthesia Permit issued by the Board of Dental Examiners. With over 25 years of extensive pediatric anesthesia experience, Dr. Lee has the knowledge and training required to manage the health and welfare of our patients who need general anesthesia. If you would like more information about Dr. Lee or general anesthesia, feel free to contact him at LeeEdwinMD@gmail.com.
